Ink
I've been filling ink cartridges for over 12 years and cannot deny having had my share of problems. The main problem is "ink everywhere". Even if you block all the ink outlets with duct tape it still seems to seep through and drip everywhere. As time passes it does get easier but even a perfectly filled cartridge can fail to operate for whatever reason. I tend to fill them and leave them for a month or longer before using. This seems to let everything settle and the system seems to work quite well. I think cartridges which have been refilled by companies specialising in the work give better service than my efforts but one thing is for sure. The only ink I shall ever use made by Canon, Epson or the others is that which comes with a new machine. Ink prices are ludicrous and must be bordering on the near illegal.

Canon MP610 Ink level after refill
More or less agree to above comments, however, anyway found the refill work easy and the printer printed perfect immediately after.
But the printer info re ink level indication after refilling was not shown, and now there is now no level indication/warning for the refilled cartridge.

Filling instructions supplied with refill ink
I have used Inkjet refill kits previously but I have always had variable success with them. The supply of a drill bit for hand drilling is a joke-I have never succeeded in hand drilling into a hard plastic cartridge and have had to use a proper hand or electric drill instead. It is also nigh impossible to get the rubber bungs supplied into the drilled holes to seal them - I have always had to use selotape instead but not always successfully as ink has continued to run from the cartridge outlet hole. Finally, why do not the instructions suggest using a bowl to place the cartridge in during refilling? Most of the ink that invariably flows from the outlet hole is then recoverable. The use also of a so called protected surface during refilling invariably leads to a total mess with ink all over the place. Comments please!
